i’m a speaker, writer and advocate focused on how technology is misused to do harm and committed to helping others do something about it.
Abuse has gone digital. I’ve spent my career supporting thousands of victims of domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault, elder abuse and human trafficking and witnessed this firsthand. It’s only getting worse. We are becoming more reliant on technology, not less. It’s no surprise that technology is rapidly becoming a preferred medium to commit acts of violence. It makes sense - why would someone stalk a victim in their car when then can follow them on their phone?
Still not convinced? Don’t take my word for it. Calls to the National Domestic Violence Hotline are up 132%. Older Americans (age 60+) are the #1 targets of cybercrime. 1 in 25 Americans are victims of online revenge porn. 75% of underage human trafficking victims report being advertised online.
For all these reasons, I got to work engaging the tech community to create trauma-informed direct service programs to screen for, respond to and prevent tech abuse. It’s why I provide trainings for Governments, Law Enforcement Agencies, Universities, Nonprofits, Hospitals and Companies. My push for stronger laws around digital impersonation are fueled by these statistics, and the survivors we support.
